Hey, You Big Dummy!

Yeah, that's me... I have one of those big, long bikes most people have only heard about. It's called a Surly Big Dummy. I bought it as a frameset and built it up with Shimano Deore bits to keep the cost down. The rear section is the LongTail Kit from Xtracycle, which I bolted some modified Bell kids seats to the SnapDeck. The LongTail Kit is what makes the magic happen. I've got room to carry 6 bags of groceries and two kids. I've actually carried about 60lbs of stuff using my Xtracycle WideLoaders plus two kids ( another 70lbs ) and it rolls right along without any issues. This bike is the bomb!

People crack up at the name, but they sure do love the bike. Everywhere I go someone will inevitably ask, "Did you make that...", or "where can I get one..."

I've had my Dummy since January 2009 and I'm still waiting for someone to drive/ride/walk by and yell, "Hey you Big Dummy.."

I use it to pick-up my boys from school as seen below, grocery store runs, running the dog, beach trips and occasionally commuting to work. It's a killer SUB ( sports utility bike ) that can do pretty much anything were speed is not required. I've done some mild mountain biking on local horse trails/fire roads and it climbs amazingly well for a 50+lbs bike.

Dada, two boys and a Big Dummy

If you Facebook there is a group called "I love my Surly Big Dummy" with lots of Big Dummy pictures doing all kinds of stuff and hauling crazy looking loads.
