Giro "Proof" Gloves
Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 8:05PM It is starting to get cold out and now it's time to start digging out that cold weather gear. I was dismayed to find that I had no good cooler weather hand protection. Lucky for me I tracked down these Giro "Proof" gloves at my local bike shop.

Giro makes gloves? Yep! They sure do. Check out that photo above too. You get two gloves here for the price of one, and that made these a unique choice for my cool weather planning. On the right you see the inner liner, on the left you see the outer shell. Either could be worn alone, or you can combine them for really cold temps.
Here's the glove liner which is a thin, Lycra-like, stretchy sort of glove perfect for cooler mornings, or when the temps or winds are bad enough to warrant full coverage gloves. You can see the shiny bits, which are rubberized gripper logos that give you a great purchase on the grips of your rig, even if things get wet. There is a fabric crew type collar that is elasticized and is long enough to overlap a long sleeved jersey or lightweight jacket. Perfect for sealing out the cold air and wind.
I have a pretty average sized men's hand, but I found the XXL size here to work the best. This gives me a slightly looser fit, which I prefer, since tight gloves make my hands go numb in a heartbeat. Normally I could wear a Large/Xl in most glove lines.
Here I slipped on the outer shell, which is lined with 40gm of Thinsulate insulatiion. The palm is made of Clarino synthetic leather with no padding. The glove has a waterproof Hipora insert to keep your mits dry. The cuff has an elastic insert to help seal out the weather, but you can also use the handy adjustable shock cord for even better sealing properties. The shock cord can be easily tightened and released with a gloved hand. A big plus in my mind!
I think the outer could suffice for most folks really cold weather needs, but Giro lists the temperature range as only going down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit/0 Centigrade, which I think feels conservative. We'll have to test that out over the coming months!
The Giro Proof glove system sells in most local bike shops for about $55.00 per pair and are available now. These gloves are made in China. Look for further updates as the Fall and Winter months come upon us.
