WIN A PAIR.” CHALLENGE

First Round Of Winners Already Announced

Smithfield, R.I. (September 20, 2011) - Gargoyles Performance Eyewear issued the “Grow a Pair. Win A Pair.” challenge last month and men across the country have been hearing the call. The “Grow a Pair. Win A Pair.” challenge was launched to reposition sunglasses in the manner in which they were originally created for, as functional tools for protecting your eyes from the elements and not for fashion purposes.

The origin of sunglasses is based in protection and performance, things Gargoyles wants men to keep top of mind. Fighter pilots during World War II wore sunglasses to shield their eyes from the blinding sun. The enhancement to the pilot’s personal appearance was an unintended byproduct. Gargoyles wants to remind men across the country that sunglasses are meant to be used for protection, a tool in their kit and not for enhancing their image when in a club at night.

All that needs to be done to take the “Grow A Pair. Win A Pair.” challenge is “Like” the Gargoyles Facebook page, then click on the sweepstakes tab located on the left-hand side of the page. In exchange for writing their Man-Pledge, Gargoyles Facebook fans will be entered to win one of three remaining prize packs, including the coveted grand prize Gargoyles Man-Kit, with winners to be chosen at random.

Now in its second month, the “Grow A Pair. Win A Pair.” challenge has been a huge success for the Gargoyles brand. Gargoyles Facebook fans from around the world, even though only US residents are eligible to win, have posted their pledges on how they want to help take sunglasses back to being functional tools designed for getting the job done.

“We’re not surprised by the response we’ve been getting for the ‘Grow a Pair. Win a Pair.’ challenge. There’s been a global cultural drive for men to start being men again, taking control of their situations and start doing things, not just talking about them,” commented Scott Sorensen, Gargoyles Brand Director.
“Gargoyles sunglasses are built for performance during mission orientated pursuits and that’s the type of person the brand resonates with.”

Prizes being given away through the “Grow a Pair. Win A Pair.” challenge include Gargoyles sunglasses and the limited-edition, newly re-issued “Let a Gargoyle Sit On Your Face” t-shirt, in addition to a Luminox Black Ops tactical watch, Vibram FiveFingers shoes and an Energizer Hard Case Tactical Light kit.
Three winners for August have been chosen already via random drawing, including Steve Scholl (Grand Prize), Dewey Hinricksen (Second Prize) and Aaron Harvey (Third Prize).

Gargoyles has a long history in performance optics and in being worn by men during critical situations. In 1979, Gargoyles revolutionized an entire industry with the invention of the Toric lens, a curved lens design that revolutionized sunglasses by allowing light to transmit directly to the eye without distortion. In the 1980’s, the U.S. Army contacted Gargoyles regarding the production and testing of specially designed wrap eyewear that would offer protection during combat situations.

Gargoyles products are worn by top athletes and outdoorsmen, who seek optimal clarity, comfort and durability in their performance eyewear. Gargoyles’ team of ambassadors range from baseball All-Stars, professional off-road racers and predatory animal experts to former elite members of the United States military and the brand’s own Gargoyles Action Shooting Team.

The second set of prizes in the Gargoyles “Grow A Pair. Win A Pair.” challenge will be awarded after the sweepstakes ends at 11:59 pm EST on September 30, 2011. A full list of rules is available on the Gargoyles Facebook “Grow A Pair. Win A Pair.” application, located at http://apps.facebook.com/growapair/.

More information about Gargoyles Performance Eyewear and their embedded suite of optical technologies can be found at www.gargoyleseyewear.com.
For 2012, Lezyne, the guys and gals that brought you sleek, polished bike pumps and a myriad of multi tools, are now bringing a new line of high end but affordable LED bike mounted lights to a bike shop near you. To introduce the new lights, the owner of Lezyne came into the conference room, dropping one of the new lights over and over as he walked. That was interesting. Apparently they are pretty rugged.

All of the lights use the best quality Cree LEDs, including the new XML. Lezyne spent some development time on the beam pattern, utilizing a reflector in combo with the front lens to achieve what they call Uniform Power Beam. As anyone who has seen a lot of LED lights can attest to, it is not all about light output (expressed in Lumens) but also about light beam pattern. The LED drivers are custom made to Lezyne's specs and standards and only the best Lithium Ion batteriesare used (and Lezyne has this cool machine that tests the output and discharge curves of any battery). As well, it is a standard 18650 type battery in the bigger lights (and yet another standard battery in the smaller ones) so if you need to, carrying a spare battery is easy enough. The lights recharge using the standard mini USB interface so charging is easy.

The handlebar mount looks straight forward and I heard rumor of a helmet mount being in the works, but that is off in the future if it happens. Water resistant as well, they look like they will not suffer an early 'death by plastic' being typically Lezyne-like in all metal construction. The clamp is not metal but comes in two sizes...31.8mm and 25.4mm. No rubber gaskets to fiddle with. Each bar diameter gets its own separate clamp.

So, this is what there is so far on the various models:

No, just espresso in the Lezyne deluxe kitchen. We did not have a chance to try any of them as only pre-production samples were in da' house, but they seem like a nice light option for moderate trail riding, an extra light as back-up to your retina burning light (1000L outputs are not uncommon for a serious trail light) and certainly as a commuter light. Hopefully we can get set up with a model or two to see how they perform after Interbike as September/October starts to signal the Fall season when night riding in So Cal begins to get into full swing.
